A case study about Covenant disadvantage

Veterans and their families may face difficulty accessing and navigating support services.

What was the situation?

Veterans and their families may require support across a range of areas, such as healthcare, housing, employment, education, and emotional wellbeing. However, it can be difficult for them to identify where to go for help and understand which services are available.

What made this Covenant disadvantage?

The transition from military to civilian life can create unique challenges for veterans and their families. Unlike civilians, veterans may have specific support needs and may be less familiar with the services available in their local area. This can make it more difficult for veterans than civilians to access the right support at the right time.

What was done to help?

Veterans First Point – an NHS veteran-led clinical and peer support service – established drop-in services across six health areas in Scotland. It was developed by veterans and clinicians, and provides help and advice on a range of issues in one place. In some areas, veterans are assigned a peer support worker who can provide guidance on practical steps to resolving an issue, recommend therapies, make referrals, and help navigate veteran support services.

What was the outcome?

Veterans and their families in Scotland are now able to access a wide range of support through a single service, rather than multiple. This makes it easier for veterans to identify and receive assistance. The provision of peer support workers helps veterans navigate available services and access support tailored to their needs.
