A case study about Covenant disadvantage

Members of the Armed Forces community are not always aware of the support available to them in their area.

What was the situation?

Members of the Armed Forces community may require support across a range of areas, such as healthcare, housing, and education, particularly when they relocate with the Armed Forces. However, it can be difficult to identify which services are available locally and where to access this support, if they have recently relocated.

What made this Covenant disadvantage?

Members of the Armed Forces community can have specific needs and may move more frequently than civilians, due to Service. This can make it more challenging to identify and access relevant local services, compared to civilians who are likely to be more familiar with the support available in their area.

What was done to help?

Forces Connect South-East – a cross-border partnership involving local authorities in the south-east region of England, local Armed Forces representation, Service charities, and the local NHS Armed Forces Networks – developed the Forces Connect app. It is a free mobile app that signposts members of the Armed Forces community to support and advice on issues such as health, housing, and education in the local area.

What was the outcome?

The Forces Connect app received initial funding from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, and is now used by more than 11,000 people. Users of the app – which includes those who are members of or supporters of the Armed Forces community – now have easier access to information about local services.
