Rutland County Council leads tri-council survey to understand local Armed Forces needs

Rutland County Council, Harborough and South Kesteven District Councils required more information on the needs of the Armed Forces community in their area. 

What was the situation?

Rutland County Council, Harborough and South Kesteven District Councils wanted to understand the experiences and needs of the Armed Forces community in their areas. Without this information, it was less likely that members of the Armed Forces community could receive the support they need.

What made this Covenant disadvantage?

Members of the Armed Forces community can face unique challenges as a result of Service life, such as frequent relocations or Service-related injuries. If local authorities do not understand the needs and experiences of the Armed Forces community, they may be less able to provide appropriate support than for civilians. This can make it more difficult for members of the Armed Forces community, compared to civilians, to access services that meet their needs.

What was done to help?

Rutland County Council led a joint project with Harborough Council and South Kesteven District Council to gather feedback from the local Armed Forces community. They commissioned Healthwatch – a health and social care champion – to develop a survey for the military community, which was available online and on paper over a four-month period. The Rutland Armed Forces Officer worked with Healthwatch to design the survey, which was then promoted via visiting military bases, and promoted on social media, radio, posters.

What was the outcome?

The survey received 700 verified responses from members of the local Armed Forces community. This provided more information on their needs and experiences. The findings from the report helped to inform policy changes which helped to better support the Armed Forces community.
