Sussex, Kent & Medway Armed Forces Network runs award-winning Service Champion training

Public service providers do not always have a detailed understanding of Armed Forces needs. 

What was the situation?

Members of the Armed Forces community often need to access a wide range of public services, including healthcare and local authority support. However, staff within these services may not always be familiar with the impact of Service life, or aware of the support that is available to the Armed Forces community.

What made this Covenant disadvantage?

Members of the Armed Forces community can experience circumstances that differ from those of civilians due to the nature of Service, such as frequent relocations or Service-related injuries. If public service providers have limited understanding of these experiences, they may be less likely to recognise when additional support is needed. This can make it more challenging for members of the Armed Forces community to access support compared to civilians.

What was done to help?

The Sussex, Kent & Medway (NHS) Armed Forces Network developed and delivered CPD-accredited Service Champions Training for staff from the NHS, local authorities, and other organisations. It is delivered in partnership with local reservists, veterans, and military charities.

Around 50 people attend the training per month. It helps participants understand how their organisation can support the Armed Forces. The programme also created a network of Service Champions who share knowledge and help improve support across different organisations.

What was the outcome?

Staff from a range of organisations have been able to improve their awareness of the Armed Forces community. Individuals who participated from across different organisations were able to collaborate and share knowledge to support those in the Armed Forces community.
