NHS funds remaining orthodontic treatment for Service child returning to UK

A Service child returning to the UK mid-way though orthodontic treatment faced barriers in continuing their orthodontic care.

What was the situation?

A child with a parent in the Armed Forces had been receiving orthodontic treatment in Saudi Arabia, after their parents were posted there. When the family returned to the UK, the child still needed five more treatments to complete the work.

However, the original dental moulds had been lost, so it could not be confirmed whether the child met the NHS Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need criteria.

The NHS Business Services Authority refused approval for NHS treatment. The family approached two orthodontic practices, both of which confirmed the child was ineligible for NHS treatment.

What made this Covenant disadvantage?

Due to the Armed Forces needing to relocate this family overseas and then back to the UK, the child’s orthodontic treatment was disrupted; this is unlike civilian families who are less likely to move as frequently, especially during ongoing treatment. Accessing and completing treatment became more difficult than for civilian families, as the child was unable to continue care as easily.

What was done to help?

The Army Families Federation worked with NHS England, the NHS Improvement Armed Forces Commissioning team, and dental commissioners to review the case; they agreed to take into consideration the sacrifices of the Armed Forces, including the family’s Service-related move. It was agreed that orthodontic treatment could be completed under NHS funding, despite the missing documentation.

What was the outcome?

The child was able to complete the remaining orthodontic treatment under NHS funding. The family was supported to overcome the disruption caused by their Service-related relocation and did not have to pay for their child’s treatment.
